The playing board measures approximately 32.5 x 32.5 cm and uses the standard 8 x 8 chess layout with 64 alternating squares. John Adams describes the board as large, bonded and laminated, giving it a more substantial playing surface than a small travel chess set. The laminated finish also provides a smooth surface for moving the wooden pieces around the board.

The set uses solid wooden chess pieces rather than flat counters or plastic tokens. Each side plays with the familiar king, queen, rooks, bishops, knights and pawns, with every type of piece following its own movement rules. Players move pieces around the board to attack and defend positions while protecting their own king.

The objective is to place the opposing king in checkmate, where the king is under attack and has no legal move that can remove the threat. Pawns move forward and capture diagonally, bishops move diagonally, rooks move along ranks and files, knights move in their distinctive L shaped pattern, the queen can move along ranks, files or diagonals, and the king moves one square at a time. These different movements create the tactical choices that define a game of chess.

Players can also encounter special chess rules including castling, pawn promotion and en passant as they learn the game in more detail. The included instruction book provides a reference for learning the rules and getting started, making this set suitable for players beginning chess as well as those who already know how to play.

The physical board measures approximately 32.5 cm square, or about 12.8 inches on each side, providing a full size playing area while remaining easy to store with the pieces between games. No batteries or electronic components are required.
