Kids Tools Guide

Kids’ tools cover the familiar jobs of building, fixing and working with tools. Toy hammers, screwdrivers, saws, spanners and pliers appear in smaller tool boxes and carry cases, while larger workbenches add screws, nuts, nails and building pieces. Toy drills, saws and other powered tools can also have moving parts, lights or sound, depending on the model.

Tool Sets and Tool Boxes

Smaller sets usually contain the tools needed for pretend repair and building jobs without taking up the space of a full workbench. Hammers, screwdrivers, saws, spanners and pliers are common, with some sets adding plastic screws, nuts and other fixings. Cases, boxes and carry trays keep the tools together and make them easy to bring from one job to another.

Kids’ Workbenches

Workbenches add a work surface, storage and more pieces to use with the tools. Smoby Black+Decker benches can include screws, nuts, nails and building boards, along with a clamp for holding pieces in place. Some models also include construction parts that can be assembled into different versions of a vehicle and then taken apart again.

The benches differ in size and contents. Some concentrate on hand tools and fixings, while larger versions add mechanical tools and more construction parts. The exact tools, accessories and working features depend on the individual workbench.

Smoby Black+Decker

Smoby produces Black+Decker toy tools and workbenches under licence from Black & Decker Corporation. The sets use the Black+Decker name and styling on toy versions of familiar workshop equipment, including hammers, saws, screwdrivers, pliers, spanners and cordless screwdrivers.

On the larger Smoby workbenches, the tools are matched with screws, nuts, nails and building parts rather than being supplied on their own. Selected benches also have a mechanical cordless screwdriver, a screw clamp and a nailing mechanism built into the workbench.

Working Toy Tools

Movement does not always mean batteries are needed. Smoby uses a mechanical cordless screwdriver on selected Black+Decker workbenches, so the screw action works without an electric motor. Other toys use batteries for lights, sounds or moving parts. Battery requirements therefore depend on the exact toy rather than the type of tool.

Age guidance also varies. Smoby lists its current Black+Decker Pro Workbench for ages 3 to 7, while other products in the ToyTown collection have their own age recommendations and warnings. Small screws, nuts and construction pieces are another reason to check the individual product before choosing a set.

Kids Tools FAQs

What age are kids’ tool sets suitable for?

The age depends on the individual toy. Smoby lists its Black+Decker Pro Workbench for ages 3 to 7. Other tool sets have their own age recommendations and warnings, so check the individual product before use.

Do kids’ tool sets need batteries?

Not always. Hand tools need no batteries, and some Smoby Black+Decker screwdrivers use a mechanical turning action. Other toy power tools use batteries for lights, sound or movement.

Are Smoby Black+Decker tools made under licence?

Yes. Black & Decker is a registered trademark used under licence on Smoby Black+Decker toy tools and workbenches.

What tools are normally included with a kids’ workbench?

The contents vary by model. Smoby Black+Decker workbenches can include hammers, saws, screwdrivers, pliers, spanners, clamps and toy cordless screwdrivers, together with screws, nuts, nails and building pieces.

What is a mechanical toy screwdriver?

A mechanical toy screwdriver produces its turning action without an electric motor. Smoby uses this type of screwdriver on selected Black+Decker workbenches.

Do kids’ workbenches have parts to build with?

Some do. Selected Smoby Black+Decker workbenches include screws, nuts, nails and construction pieces that can be joined with the supplied tools.

Smoby lists spare parts for a number of its Black+Decker workbenches. Availability depends on the exact model and the part required.
