Hot Wheels Since 1968

Hot Wheels was launched by Mattel in 1968 with 16 cars now known as the Original 16. Mattel created the original line as diecast toy cars with an emphasis on appearance and track performance.

Hot Wheels now includes individual cars, tracks, playsets, Monster Trucks, Formula 1 vehicles, construction sets and collector releases. The cars include original Hot Wheels creations alongside vehicles from real manufacturers, motorsport and licensed entertainment ranges.

Hot Wheels Cars and 1:64 Scale

Most Hot Wheels cars are produced in 1:64 scale. Mattel also produces Hot Wheels vehicles in other sizes, including larger Monster Trucks and remote control models.

Standard 1:64 Hot Wheels cars include original Hot Wheels creations, real road cars, racing cars and licensed models. ToyTown's current Hot Wheels collection also includes Formula 1 cars, multipacks and Japanese car themed packs such as Hot Wheels Streets of Japan.

Hot Wheels Tracks, Racing and Garages

Hot Wheels Track Creator sets use straight track, curves, loops, jumps, launchers, boosters and connectors. Track sections can be rearranged to build different racing layouts for Hot Wheels cars.

Most Hot Wheels track sets work with standard 1:64 scale Hot Wheels diecast vehicles. Current Speed Snap track uses snap together connectors. Mattel includes adapters with compatible Speed Snap products so the newer track can connect to older Hot Wheels e-track.

Hot Wheels garages combine track with structures such as parking levels, ramps, launchers and car storage. Hot Wheels City takes the same car and track system into sets built around locations and obstacles.

Choosing Between Hot Wheels Cars, Tracks and Garages

Individual Hot Wheels cars can be collected, pushed by hand or raced on compatible track. Multipacks put several cars together in one pack. Track sets use pieces such as launchers, loops, jumps, curves and connectors for racing.

Hot Wheels garages and City playsets combine track with structures and moving features. City sets can include parking areas, ramps, launchers, car washes, garages and creature obstacles, with many sets connecting to compatible Hot Wheels track.

Mattel rates standard 1:64 basic Hot Wheels cars for ages 3 years and up. Current Track Creator products include sets rated from 3 years and sets rated from 4 years. Many current Hot Wheels City playsets are rated from 4 years. A four year old is therefore within Mattel's stated age range for standard Hot Wheels cars and many current Track Creator and Hot Wheels City sets.

Hot Wheels Formula 1

Formula 1 is an official Hot Wheels range. Mattel produces 1:64 Formula 1 cars, Premium Formula 1 cars, multipacks and Formula 1 track sets. Standard 1:64 Formula 1 cars can race on Hot Wheels orange track as well as being collected.

ToyTown's current Hot Wheels collection includes Formula 1 cars and the Hot Wheels F1 Race Sprint Set. Formula 1 building sets are also available in the LEGO Formula 1 collection at ToyTown.ie.

Hot Wheels City and Monster Trucks

Hot Wheels City sets use locations, ramps, launchers and obstacles as parts of the track layout. ToyTown currently stocks Hot Wheels City products including the Hot Wheels City Shark Chomp Beach Playset, Hot Wheels City Transforming Race Tower and Hot Wheels City Nemesis Launcher Assortment.

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks use oversized bodies and large wheels. Mattel produces 1:64 Monster Trucks, larger 1:24 Monster Trucks, remote control trucks and dedicated Monster Trucks playsets. Their larger wheels and body proportions differ from standard Hot Wheels cars. Mattel produces Monster Trucks playsets with tracks, ramps and play areas sized for these vehicles.

Hot Wheels Premium and Collecting

Mattel's collector lines include Hot Wheels Premium, Car Culture, Formula 1 Premium, Red Line Club releases, Treasure Hunts and Super Treasure Hunts.

Hot Wheels Premium cars can use metal bodies and chassis with Real Riders tyres. Premium ranges cover real car manufacturers, motorsport and licensed vehicles, including Formula 1 cars.

Treasure Hunts are Hot Wheels cars produced in smaller quantities and included within basic Hot Wheels assortments. Super Treasure Hunts are harder to find versions of mainline castings and can use Spectraflame paint and Real Riders wheels.

Mattel Brick Shop Hot Wheels

Mattel Brick Shop Hot Wheels sets build licensed cars from bricks and can include metal parts, decals and customisation pieces.
