Children’s bikes start with very different ways of learning to ride. A balance bike has no pedals, so the rider pushes from the ground while learning to steer and balance. Children’s bike sizes such as 12 inch and 16 inch refer to the wheel diameter, but wheel size is only part of choosing the correct fit. Bike manufacturers also use rider height, age and sometimes inseam measurements when recommending a size. Two bikes with the same wheel diameter can have different recommended ages or rider heights, which is why the measurements for the individual bike matter.
