Bikes Guide
Children’s bikes start with very different ways of learning to ride. A balance bike has no pedals, so the rider pushes from the ground while learning to steer and balance. The Yvolution Velo Junior takes this a step further with two rear wheels at first, which can later be changed to a single rear wheel as the child progresses. Its seat and handlebars are adjustable.

Children’s bike sizes such as 12 inch and 16 inch refer to the wheel diameter, but wheel size is only part of choosing the correct fit. Bike manufacturers also use rider height, age and sometimes inseam measurements when recommending a size. Two bikes with the same wheel diameter can have different recommended ages or rider heights, which is why the measurements for the individual bike matter.
As children move onto pedal bikes, the equipment also varies between models. Adjustable saddles and removable stabilisers are common on the beginner bikes represented here, while braking systems are not the same across every 12 inch or 16 inch bike. Huffy, for example, produces children’s bikes with coaster brakes as well as models using hand brakes, so the controls should be checked on the individual bike rather than assumed from wheel size alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a coaster brake on a children's bike?
A coaster brake is operated by pedalling backwards. Huffy's children's bike manuals distinguish these from freewheel bikes that use hand brakes.
Can stabilisers be adjusted as a child learns to ride?
On Huffy children's bikes fitted with its training-wheel system, the stabilisers can be raised gradually and eventually removed as the child's riding ability improves. Huffy also specifies that both stabilisers should be set the same distance from the ground.
What should be checked before riding a bike with stabilisers?
Huffy instructs that the rear axle nuts should be tight and both stabilisers should be the same distance from the ground before each ride.
Do the wheels on the Yvolution Velo Junior need to be inflated?
No. Yvolution specifies non-marking, puncture-proof wheels on the Velo Junior.
